Sitting Posture for Handwriting

The quality of handwriting can be influenced by the fit of a student’s body to their chair and desk. Slouching can be a bad habit that can develop from a poor seating system. Teachers can support proper writing posture for their students by following a few easy tips.

• When students sit back in their chairs their feet should be flat on the floor, if not, place a duct-taped phone book under their feet or try a shorter chair.
• The upper legs should be parallel to the floor which gives the hips and knees each a 90 degree angle.
• A student should have a space between themselves and the edge of the desk that is about the length of their fist.
• If the knees touch the bottom of the desk when a student is trying to sit close they need the height adjusted or a taller desk.
• Students should have their elbows bent a few inches below armpit height when placing their arms on the desk to write, if the elbows are parallel to the armpit height or above, the desk is too tall and needs adjustment or another desk.

Alternative seating arrangements can be developed for students who require more movement throughout the day. These arrangements can be minor additions such as a partially inflated small beach ball or purchased air cushion or major differences like a ball chair. Emphasizing the importance of good posture for handwriting tasks will help student awareness for future good habits.
